"Clipper Trip"
The Boeing B-314 Clippers were the first commercial aircraft to fly across both the Atlantic and the Pacific. Under the leadership of Juan Trippe, Pan American Airways System led the way in the development of commercial aviation. The Boeing B-314 was the most luxurious of the Pan Am flying boats, capable of carrying mail and passengers to the far flung corners of the earth. These aircraft were instrumental in Pan American's expansion around the world. Its contribution to the war effort cannot be underestimated. Helping to bring materials and staff to areas where, eventually, land-based airports would be built leading to its own demise.
My interest in the "Clipper" started with my Dad. Starting in 1943, he worked on these aircraft for B.O.A.C. in Foynes, Ireland. Later, my Mom would work for Pan American in New York. And, during WWII, my father-in-law was flown to Bermuda for his tour of duty on a Clipper.
My original intention was to create this sculpture for my Dad. After having it cast, there has been enough interest to produce a limited edition of 50.
